Once upon a time, in Ms.Valentine’s classroom, Mr.Cowart came to the 3rd grade ELA classroom to read two books. Mr. Cowart is a Levy County School Board member and a coach for basketball. He shared that when he was a kid he dreamed of being a basketball player, but that didn’t work out so he used his enthusiasm to become a coach. He also shared that he had come to visit us as a coach of literacy, and as a way to celebrate Literacy Week.
Mr.Cowart began his visit by reading our mystery book of the week, Oh The Places You’ll Go, to the eagerly listening third graders. After reading, Mr.Cowart asked the students what happened and what the story was about. Ty John commented that in the book “there was lots of rhyming”. Leila Rodriguez added the book was “mostly about places life will take you”. Emily Pontes also shared that in the book, and life, “there are lots of monsters”.
After sharing 1 book the students begged for another, and as an encore Mr.Cowart read the PBS Book of the month, A Hard Day’s Work. Students discussed how the book showed an example of our PBS character trait trustworthiness.
After he read the books, he then gave dictionaries to each 3rd grade student enrolled at YTS!! These dictionaries were donated from the Williston Rotary Club and the Williston Pioneer Sun News. He told students to look for unknown words in these books, that they were tools to help become better readers.
All the third grade students reflected on their visit after Mr. Cowart left and discussed how Mr.Cowart is very nice for coming to Yankeetown School to read to the 3rd grade as well as provide us tools to keep on our journey toward academic excellence.
